First Grade Is Busy!

 In Uncategorized

Dear Parents,

First Grade is moving right along. This week, our firsties are beginning to blend and write short a words in class. Our other big literacy focus is writing a sentence, using a capital and period. They are really trying hard. In math, we are working on addition facts within 10. For example, this looks like 1+9, 5+5, so forth. Throughout class, I am continuing to focus on our sight word mastery…it is so important for learning how to read.

Did you know this literacy fact? According to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) found that children who were read to frequently are also more likely to: count to 20, or higher than those who were not (60% vs. 44%), write their own names (54% vs. 40%), read or pretend to read (77% vs. 57%) I am not trying to scare you but to make you aware of the importance of reading at home. As a teacher, I am hoping to decrease illiteracy and have children enjoy reading anywhere. Additionally, I am eager for all of my students to leave my classroom with strong literacy skills.
