Firstie Weekly News
Dear Parents,
I am loving your first grader and they are loving learning how to read.
This week, our firsties are learning to stretch words out and write them in their journals. The class is also learning to use capitals and periods in their work. In math, our class is adding within 10 and adding doubles. For example, an addition double is- 2+2, 3+3, 4+4, 5+5, 6+6, and so forth. This skill allows children to apply this skill to other addition facts, encouraging more mental math. Please practice on the drive to school.
Other news is our Scholastic Book Order. Yesterday, I sent home a detailed letter about the book order in your child’s green folder. Early literacy and reading starts now. The book order is a great opportunity to foster a love for reading with your child.
In your child’s green folder, I am sending home a chart about the 5 Finger Rule for reading. As we move forward, this chart will help you choose books that are just right for your child. In class, I am practicing this concept with your child. Please read it over and begin choosing books that are just right to support your child’s reading level. It is perfect for the refrigerator, as a reference!

Wednesday the 25th is our first half day!
Picture Day Schedule
Reminder, next Wednesday is fall picture day! We are looking forward to seeing the kids dressed in their best – make sure they also follow our guidelines for appropriate clothing. School photos take place during the day and sports photos will occur that day during practice time.
